Samsung's newest flagship phone is a blast from the past
ICYMI Samsung announced three new smart phones today during their annual Samsung Unpacked event. During the live feed they talked about the devices coming later this year creatively named the Galaxy S22, S22+, and my favorite of the group the S22 Ultra.
Now the S22 and S22+ are no surprise. They carry a build similar the S21 with updated specs and an incredible display. The real star of the show was what Samsung did with the S22 Ultra. Die hard Samsung fans stop me if you've ever heard this one before but do you remember a phone named the Galaxy Note??? Yes to some and no to others I assume but have no fear, let's go back in time a little.
See the Galaxy Note was a king of it's time. The phone was literally named "Note" because of it's size. Most cell phones back then packed screens no larger than 4 inches diagonally but the Note...this goliath of a phone had a screen of nearly six. Which again, was a very big deal back then. Samsung packed this device with top of the line specs making it beast amongst it's peers and the icing on the cake was the proprietary S-Pen that only worked with Galaxy Note model phones. It's been a few years since we've last seen a Note model phone included in Samsung's lineup and I'm happy to say that that dry spell officially ended yesterday. Sort of.
That's right. Let me explain.
While the name of the phone is Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung isn't officially calling this phone by one of their Note monickers. There's no Note in the branding at all. They're considering this to be a top tier Galaxy branded phone with an S-Pen yet, when you look at it the phone has all of the makings of a Galaxy Note. It's packing a 6.8 inch display...comparable to a Note phone.
There's 12gb of RAM onboard, again comparable to what you'd see on a Note. The Snapdragon 8 octacore processor and 108MP camera? Note and Note. The spec chart alone screams Note and the added compatibility of a built-in S-Pen also screams Note. So my question is...given they gave us two other Galaxy phones why didn't they just name this model the Galaxy S22 Note versus calling it Ultra? Samsung is no stranger to taking risks and maybe this is one of them. All I can say is this phone is great. Watch out iPhone 13 Pro Max. There's a new sheriff in town.
